Causes Contrary to popular belief, a cataract is not a film or "skin" that grows over the eye, but the lens itself becoming cloudy. The lens clouds naturally as we age, so people over age 50 usually see a gradual reduction of vision. Cataracts can also be caused by complications of other diseases such as diabetes and glaucoma, by side effects of certain medications such as steroids, and by infection, trauma or hereditary disorders.
