Diabetic Retinopathy and the Diabetes Research Institute

Diabetic retinopathy is a common ocular complication of diabetes. As the leading cause of blindness in adults 25 to 74 years of age, it affects approximately 5.3 million Americans age 18 and older. According to the National Eye Institute, of the estimated 14 million Americans living with Diabetes, about 40 to 45 percent have at least mild signs of diabetic retinopathy.

Driven by hope and fueled by the need to end the suffering of those living with diabetes, including those with diabetic retinopathy, the Diabetes Research Institute, the most comprehensive diabetes research facility of its kind, is a recognized world leader in cure-focused research.

Assisting DRI pioneer new technologies, Dr. William J. Rand, founder, medical director and chief surgeon of the Rand Eye Institute, has been an integral part of the Diabetes Research Institute family since 1985. Having served on the board of directors of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation since 1990, Dr. Rand, in 2003, became the first chairman of the DRIF Florida Regional Board and vice-chairman of the National DRIF organization.

Dr. Rand is a top South Florida LASIK surgeon. From his Broward County office, he helps patients from Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami obtain The Best Vision Possible. He is also considered a South Florida cataract surgery specialist. For implant surgery, Dr. Rand uses the newest technology ReSTOR, ReZOOM and Crystalens lenses. Diabetes Research Institute
