DEERFIELD BEACH , Fla. -- On Monday, May 15, 2006 as part of Broward County Public School's Partners in Education program, Rand Eye Institute, a leader in ophthalmology, hosted nearly 100 seventh grade students from Crystal Lake Middle School, who received an introduction to the fields of ophthalmology and optometry while learning about the anatomy and physiology of the eye.

The highlight of the visit was the rare opportunity to view a live surgical procedure, performed by Rand Eye Institute's medical director and chief surgeon, Dr. William J. Rand.

"Why isn't he blinking?" asked one student as he viewed the removal of a cataract lens from a live television monitor.

"Are they awake?" questioned another student.

Rand Eye Institute, which has supported the school for more than a decade through the program, regularly hosts Crystal Lake Middle School along with other public schools to supplement the in-class curriculum included in the student's science/pre-engineering magnet program. The tour provides first-hand knowledge about the inner working of the eye, insight into the scientific / medical equipment used in evaluations and treatment, as well as the different career opportunities in the fields of ophthalmology and optometry.

Partners In Education improves student achievement by cultivating and integrating business, community and school resources for all students in Broward County Public Schools. All Broward County Schools are available for new partnerships. Businesses may make commitments of time, financial resources or other support, based on the need of the school and the type of business. For more information about the program, please contact Nina A. Randall, APR, Executive Director at 754-321-1974 or nrandall@browardschools.com.
